Rusty Atwood has patient pending designs for a New state battery #64/099289
I've filed a provisional patent on a solid-state magnesium-ion battery architecture early-stage development, refined through extensive simulation across candidate materials.
The core idea: a battery that's cheaper and easier to produce, not just a lab curiosity. The design uses only earth-abundant materials magnesium-nickel alloy, iron-nickelate, titanium/tungsten nitride no lithium, no rare earths, no platinum-group metals.
Why that matters:
Safety: solid-state design, no liquid electrolyte, no flammability/thermal runaway risk
Supply chain de-risking: built entirely from earth-abundant materials, sidestepping the lithium/rare-earth/platinum bottlenecks the industry is currently stuck with
Cold-weather performance: projected to operate down to -40°F, addressing a well-known EV pain point
Manufacturing compatibility: layered deposition process designed to work with existing battery production infrastructure, no exotic sintering or new factories required
Longevity: projected cycle life of 2,000–5,000+ full charges and 25+ year projected service life
Other projected performance figures:
800 1,200 Wh/L volumetric energy density
300 450 Wh/kg gravimetric energy density
These are early-stage, projected figures based on the underlying design and modeling not yet validated in a built prototype. That's the next step.
I'm looking to connect with people and organizations interested in helping build and test a prototype materials scientists, battery engineers, manufacturers, or anyone who's worked on solid-state or magnesium-ion chemistries. If that's you, or you know someone who fits, I'd love to talk.
